It's billed as a memoir about coping with a lifetime of feeling poor, and it is that; but it could also be seen as a memoir about a life like any other: a demonstration of the fact that every life, once you get down to the particulars, is laden with tension, drama, heartbreak, elation, suspense—all the stuff of story, great story. Oh, and let me not forget to applaud This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff. One of my favorites is John Lanchester's Family Romance: A Love Story.
